I'm going to start off by saying I'm a duck call maker so I've met and dealt with a lot of duck hunters.

You will get a lot more out of driving around and scouting look at tpwd wma's and other public spots. Asking on public forums is kinda a no no expecially when you're brand new. I hunt public a lot and it was hard to find good spots but after a lot of scouting and work I've figured it out. This is the same story for a lot of duck hunters so just giving up all that info to someone they don't know is tough. Duck hunters get a bad rep because of this but it's the same thing as putting out a deer feeder, stand, camera and then just let someone you don't know hunt it. If you're ever in the east texas area I would be glad to take you on a hunt.

I hunted public waters a lot and my best piece of advice (after scouting) is to have at least two backup places close by because half of the time there will already be someone there when you pull up.

I finally resulted to sleeping in my truck and setting my dekes out at 3:00 am. I almost had a violent run-in with a guy one morning because he drove all the way out to "his" spot and I was in it. Just get ready for the occasional ticked off wacko, but the hunting can be really good.

He needs to know what it takes to be successful and if he's not willing to out that work in, maybe he should think really hard about whether or not he wants to do it.
Let me tell you a little story about Lake Lavon, now known as Lake X.......

If you want to learn about duck hunting public land/lakes, it's best to hook up with someone who hunts the areas you're close to. Good luck this fall!

Try asking this question on a duck hunting site. I promise the responses will be much harsher.

That's what I had to do. There's nothing like dedicating a few weekends to scout.

One very very slow cold morning in the duck blind, after drinking several shots of peppermint shcnapps in with my coffee, I had a duck fly down and land right beside me in the blind. It was the durndest thing I'd ever seen! Then this duck proceeded to talk, ask-n for a shot of schnapps! I was astounded to say the least. He looked kinda like he could use some go-juice. So, be-n the friendly feller that I am, I handed him my flask. Then a thought occurred to me to ask him a question. After all, I was share-n my flask with him. And he was a duck! So I proceeded to ask him where the best place to go find ducks was. His reply was "Go South, and keep on going." Then he just flew off. I was so bewildered at this here occurrence, I had to take another nip. Then another, and a nap. I woke up later that afternoon, empty handed again.

Just thought I'd share a bit of info with everyone on where I was told to go. Best to ya all come duck season.

Too early too really scout, but good time too learn backwaters. Think like a duck, where is food, somewhere to get out of the weather and open enough to land and take off?

                          Good luck grasshoppa

This is the case no matter if you're in Texas, Kansas, Tennessee, ect. So anyone that acts like there is a "honey hole that only they know about", is full of **** as a Christmas turkey. I'm not trying to ugly, but do like everyone else and get yourself a map of the public lakes in your area from TP and W, figure out where you can hunt, where you can get (by 4 wheeler or boat or walking...) and go scout and find the birds. Then shoot them in the face.

There's no secret to it, CMurph. Just a little work and fuel.

                              Good luck.

Oh, and if you're not willing to drive all over the state to shoot birds, you should stick to the deer hunting and save yourself the time and money. Or, you should start using cocaine. It's a cheaper habbit and the women are hotter...
Best reply I have seen in a while!

I will be hunting in Somerville this fall for ducks. If you wanna drive a bit.

Its a pretty good drive from where you are, but here in SETX, McFaddin NWR and JD Murphee State WMA have a good amount of ducks. I am still learning where they are and how to locate them, but I have learned that the best time to look for ducks is during Teal season. After your morning hunt is over, use the afternoon to ride around and see whats out there. If you don't shoot or see anything and you don't hear any shots, you may have to take a pretty good drive to locate some birds.

                                Good Luck!
