    Elk hunt advice

I got invited to go to Colorado in September to go elk hunting on public land with a few friends.

I've never been elk hunting or hunting on public land.

I could use some advice on what to buy clothes wise etc.

I shoot PSE REVENGE 70 lbs with a 5 pin sight.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Drop some coin on real boots! Even if you have to wear walmart camo to make up the difference.

Be prepared to walk and climb a BUNCH. Remember when you start take a day pack with all of the food and water you need for a full day and then some. I went this past September and did real good physically until I hit 10K foot elevation and then had problems with energy levels, of course that might be an age thing. Dress well and remember you will be cold and hot, dry and wet. Take more than one light and something to start a fire and something to protect you from the rain. Also have a GPS to keep you from getting lost. Your 70# bow is good enough, just use some good broad heads, (fixed blade IMO) and learn how to use a cow call. Remember, this is very addicting and you may be ruint for life.

Will you be packing in or base camping from the truck? Gear needs for packing in are big your first year.

I have and wear Sitka, Kuiu and Core 4. All are good and will serve you well. Check out the used market on here, Archery Talk, Rokslide and others.

We are about to get into my favorite time of year for gear. Guys unloading quality gear to get money for xmas and stores discounting their stock to get ready for new stuff.

X2 I like to take a good pair of boots like Kenetreks and some good hiking shoes.
Best advice, is get your lungs in shape! The clothing that time of year is less important as long as you have some good rain gear. Depending on where you go it could rain a little every day. I like to ride a bike up hills as hard as I can go. I try to really work my legs and lungs. If I don't feel like I am about to die, I know I ain't trying hard enough! Good luck! you will be hooked!

Thanks for all the help.....im pretty excited. I read a few books but sometimes experience is the best teacher and I knew there was plenty of experience here.

So the temp is hot and cold in Colorado in September?

YUP. I been there in Sept. when its freezing cold with a foot and a half of snow, and been there when I was sweating my....... off! you never know. Normally mornings and evenings will be cool/cold mid day will be warm. I like to dress in light layers. I don't pack anything thick. If you plan on hiking a good ways in the morning? Wear less than you think you should. It don't take long and you will be too hot while walking. Cotton is not a good choice IMO.

Something I'm going to try this year is wear a scarf around my mouth to limit how much air I can breath, try to simulate the lack of air while I'm training.

Another thing is, stay hydrated, big thing to keep altitude sickness away.
