Wanton waste rules for hogs @ wma

Can anyone show me how the law reads in regard to what must be taken when a hog is killed on a texas wma? I know wanton waste does not apply to hogs on private land but I have a suspicion that it will on public land. I've scoured tpwd site and the aph book for info but havent found anything specific to this topic.

It varies by site and manager. Some of them tell you to go ahead and kill all you can and let them lay if you can't get them out. Others tell you to make sure you recover every animal killed and haul it out.

Wanton applies to game animals, hogs are not game animals.

But I have heard of stupider requirements. I will interested to know the truth to your question in case I am wrong.

I wasn't under the impression that the WMAs had seperate rules on the wanton waste when it comes to hogs. However, they may have seperate guidelines for mandatory removal of the carcass after the kill. You might want to call the WMA contact to be certain for each WMA you hunt (they also usually give you great advice about the area.)

It is an offense (Class C misdemeanor) if a person intentionally takes or possesses a
game bird, game animal, or a fish and intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly, or with criminal negligence, fails to keep the edible portions of the bird, animal, or fish in an edible condition.

          GAME ANIMALS
          WHITE TAIL DEER
          DESERT BIGHORN SHEEP
          GRAY OR CAT SQUIRREL
          COLLORED PECCARY
          MULE DEER
          PRONGHORN ANTELOPE
          RED OR FOX SQUIRREL
          JAVELINA

Exotic animal refers to grass-eating or plant-eating, single-hoofed or cloven-hoofed mammals
that are not indigenous or native to Texas and are known as ungulates, including animals from
the deer and antelope families that landowners have introduced into this state. Includes, but
is not limited to feral hog..."

I am no lawyer, but the way I read that is Hogs are not game animals because they are Exotics, so Wanton Waste law does not apply.

This is my interpretation, based on a what I've seen in the TPWD and US regs, get what you want and leave the rest. It does seem a waste to shoot one and leave it, like shooting crows, gar, ect and leaving it.

I was told by Rick Cantu the man in charge at Hagerman WMA that I did not have to recover my hog.

So how does this work with Aoudad at say Caprock, Devils River, or Palo Duro? They make you haul the animal back out of the canyon or can you just take the cape and head?

They can vary from one wma to another but Auodad at say dr wma, they encourage you to shoot everyone you see..and there are plenty...you can cut heads or let them lay, it seems like a waste but they are a detriment to the range...

Leave it lay. These helicopter shoots they have in the WMAs for the hogs in the spring leave hundreds of hogs dead. And it's ran by the TPWD. They are nuesuance animals.
