First year hunting Fort Cavazos. I hunted Fort Polk when I was in the military and it wasn’t that bad. I got out and since I’ve moved back home been hunting a lot of public land. So I heard all the negatives from people but what are some of the positives. I’ve spent the last 3 days scouting areas that are open.

Been hunting out there since the early 80's. It go so screwed up that i quit hunting out there for 20 years. Since they changed last year i gave it another try. I absolutely had a great time. Spent more time out there than my lease. Positives, no more guided hunts, i never had a hunt messed up by other hunters and free to spend as much time running around enjoying the place as you want. I didn't have one negative experience.

Ft. Hood as it should always be called. I grew up inside and on the outside of that place. I recall the days being able to drive across the base from Ft. Gates (N. of Gatesville) all the way to Copperas Cove as a citizen. We had a few handful of cows we got to run on the west side of Hood for a few years. They definitely had to be the rangy type in that country.
I grew up with a kid and he and his dad hunted Hood yearly and they brought home some fine bucks. I recall them telling me it took some work but there are some real fine deer to be had on the place.
I believe a member here a few years bagged a nice buck there. Stickslinger? Lives outside Belton?

Until they change the climate of the place, it will always be Hood. You can’t put lipstick on a pig type deal. Clean up the terrible commands and THEN give it a new name if you want. All the negatives don’t just magically disappear.
Although I’m stationed there, I have yet to hunt on post. The place I grew up hunting is about an hour east of post so just have not gone on post yet. I know there was a lot of fussing and upset people over the changes they made this last year. If you put in the work, there are plenty of deer to be killed and nice bucks are out there. I’ve seen many while out flying around. Surprised I don’t see more pigs though. I came from HAAF/Stewart out in Savannah and Stewart was really covered up with pigs.
Go put some foot work in and find you a nice secluded area. You will find deer.

My Dad was from Gatesville. Moved away early in his life but moved back later. Not gonna get into our history but I only got to know him good in my late 30's. He had moved back to G'Ville by then. His family had some land, enough to hunt on, up on , I think it was 107, a few miles outta town. I could hear artillery, machine gun fire and it was not anything special to have a Huey or Sikorsky fly over really low while I was sitting in a box blind. Talk about moving deer!
Dad has passed on several yrs. ago and I do not hunt up there anymore but I still think of it as Fort Hood. Have to drive past there on 36 on the way into town. If the camp was not there I don't think G' Ville would be either
