    San Angelo State Park

I am looking into some public hunting areas for bowhunting whitetail this next season. I have a ranch in southeastern Oklahoma that I do most of my hunting on but I would like to hunt in texas somewhere. I have hunted mostly out west in knox city and sweetwater so I am more familiar with that type of terrain. Anyone know anything about San Angelo State Park or have any suggestions or info on anywhere else.

I use to live there. There is no hunting in the park, however there is a small area of land across the street from the park that is managed by the park that you can hunt. I jumped a few deer there but never got a shot off.

I have hunted there for a lot of years until this past season. We have taken several white tails (both buck and doe) from there. Be sure and do some investigating before you go, last season a body was found in one of the areas and they shut down that section and the one beside it for the season. There are seven or eight sections there that vary from around 300 acres to 1500 acres. Not bad hunting for public land. Weekdays are the best, San Angelo is only a couple of miles away and it draws a lot of local hunters.

Talk to San Angelo Bowman (Rob). He's a great guy and often willing to show someone around.

You can go to the San Angelo State Park web page for all the details needed to hunt the park.

'Walk-in' hunting, requires the Annual Public Hunting Permit (APH) $48 along with a valid hunting license, in your case, the Non-Resident General Hunting License, $315 plus the Archery Stamp Endorsement, $7. The APH for the 2012-2013 season will be available August 15th when the new licenses go on sale.

With the APH, it is Archery Only, no firearms may be used for deer.

TPWD does have Special Drawing Hunts at that location also and are controlled hunts where only a certain number of selected hunters may hunt at one time. The drawing hunt booklet is available at the end of the first week in July at any of the Law Enforcement offices http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/warden/office_locations/
and there is one located in San Angelo also. TPWD does not have application submission available as of yet, but you can download the applications of their website www.tpwd.state.tx.us and fill out the applications for the Hunt Categories you are intersted in.

Rob is awesome, but I think some of you are getting the state park and Twin Buttes confused.

Anyone having any luck in the park this year? Counted 21 vehicles at the gates satuday night before the storm hit. It was a muddy mess on Sunday morning but I had 3 bucks come in in the morning just out of shooting range. Havent seen a doe yet. The turkeys showed up at 6 pm. regret to say i am a poor shot on turkeys.
