    Somerville hogs

I have yet to go scout out the WMA at Somerville and am wondering why I don't see more posts about hog hunting there? Is it worth driving up from NW Houston?

I don't hunt up there but my mom lives there and she has a ton of deer that she feeds everyday.....

My mom says the hogs are showing up more and more in the last couple years.... I think the hog population is on the rise in that area going from what she tells me... Might be worth checking into for some off season hunting...

Hope this starts a good thread...

I've been once back in late May and saw a lot of sign, and a dead hog lyin' in the middle of the road (yeah, I know... ). I plan on going back after I get done scouting out the last parts of Granger that I haven't been in yet. I've seen just as much hog sign if not more in Somerville than I have in Granger. Both of them are about a 2 hr 15 min drive from San Antonio, so it's a draw for me as to which is closer.

I intend to combo hunt deer & hogs there after October when Granger closes it's units to public hog hunting while the draw hunts for deer take place ('cause I'm not giving up hog huntin')...Somerville allows non-draw public archery hunting for both deer and hogs during that period so that's where I'll be. I'll do it my way re spot & stalk/still/field expediant ground blind (back into a bush or against a tree just off a trail).

I'd like to see more commentary from folks about hunting hogs there too as most of what I've found is about the deer hunting there

I'd like to see your post grow into a good thread on the subject...anybody????

Thinking I'm not going scouting. I'll just take the bow and go walk the place and see if I spot anything. Then perhaps I'll find a spot I want to come back and set up on another time.

The public lands around Somerville are pretty good. We always saw pigs. Just don't waste your time with the corps of engineers land "draw" lease hog hunt.

Those people blew so much smoke up our *** when we tried to do it. It's all rigged and under the table. We called right before the draw to make sure everything was complete, which it was. We told them how much we hunted pigs, provided pics and that we had the time to really hunt over the next 6months had feeders and traps etc..., They said we were the type of hunters they needed and that not many people submitted for the draw. Amazingly with in 8hrs, there were 500 more apps than when we spoke to them....

Jmh05, I was wondering about that draw/lease thing they had put out and ALMOST applied, but then changed my mind. Sounds like it was the right move.

Also good to hear about the pigs frequenting the Somerville area! I'll be making a few trips out there after I've been through all the sections at Granger (about a month from now I'd guess). In time to pre-season scout the WMA for the upcoming deer season and still be able to skewer a pig if I run into one

Idaho, I may have seen you there early morning one year, backed off a trail. Legal baiting ends this month. Last year I met guys from Houston that had shot one. I had scouted and about decided there weren't any at the south end of the Yegua compartment when three little porkers came off the trail at sundown, went under the WMA sign, and down the trail on the other side. They emptied my bait before I could get back to hunt over it. This year the parking area was blocked off at the Yegua spot, and I didn't want to negotiate the woods on the North end of Yegua, so I went to the West end of nails, but nothing had come to the bait tubes in four days. There are hogs there, you just don't know where they are going to be when.

Dang. I was hoping for better prospects. Probably 3/4 tank of gas for me round trip so say $40 versus a place 10 minutes from the house where I can hunt over feeders all night for $100.

I hunted there 3 years ago. It was a whirl wind evening hunt. I saw LOTS of pig sign along the creek. It had rained alot and tracks were every where. I would love to go back if any one is interested PLEASE PM me! It is an hour away from my house, all i need is motivation and a hunting buddy.

I'm also dying to get out and hunt. If anyone is going any time soon let me know. Seem like everytime I get the chance at a hunt something else comes up but this could be the time!

I know it might be a little warm, but does anyone want to take a mid august trip?

The last time i was there it was mid summer. The creek had water running through it(the only source of water i found). That might make for some good spot and stalk if we can find pigs that are thirsty.

Mid August sounds good to me. It is right before I have to get back to work.

The reason you don't see many hog out there is because of all the foot traffic. I have hunted out there for the last 5 years and it has steadly gotten worse. Last season I made the trip out 6 times all season. Only saw pigs once and deer twice. But that's public hunting for you. Right now it is to hot to work on a pig a mile back in.
