    DIY Home-made Lens Coat

A year ago, my lovely bride bought me one of those over-priced LensCoat brand lens protection sets. Basically, these are just neoprene sleeves you slide over various sections of your lens. It's not much for the money they charge, but after having my holy grail lens smash a gravel road and not receive a scratch due to the LensCoat....I'm a believer. The LensCoat didn't stop it from breaking in two, but cosmetically, it was as good afterwards as it was before.

So, being a believer, but not wanting to drop the cash on one that LensCoat asks, I took it upon myself to craft one up for my new 300mm F4L IS.

I found some digital camo neoprene fabric and my wife and I sat down tonight to make a protective cover for the lens.

    Lens, tools, tasty adult beverage:

Getting carried away and only using 1 square foot of the 12 I bought!!! Man, the possibilities are endless.

I need to figure out what to do with the rest of it.

My wife and I were talking about how she has never followed through on making one of these for me yet.

Where did you get the neoprene from Casey?

I like that digital pattern, need to order some myself.

That's way cool, Casey. Where'd you find the neoprene, and what did it cost?

PS: That's probably the world's only wrapped TC.

Nah, they make wraps for TCs.

I got it at rockywoods.com. 3' x 50" cost me $45 to my door. I have a lot left over. I gotta think of things to do with it. I make a few of these lens sleeves for various lenses. I'll let y'all know in case someone needs one. I'm not suggesting they're as good as what the pro's make, but they will perform on the same level, protecting your gear from dents and dings.

Looks great Casey! And I thought you were just going to cannibalize some TBH koozies. Barb has mad skills. If we only had a sewing machine.

What thickness neoprene fabric did you buy? After making some lens covers is that the thickness you would recommend? What type sewing stitch did your wife use?

Just when I was about to compliment YOUR skills ... you confess that your bride did the work!

                            Maybe next time!

Oh, looks like it'll keep your lens nice and warm.

Awesome, Casey! But here's what I don't understand. Why in the world does Canon make them white to begin with? If it were up to me, every piece of camera equipment on the planet would be flat black.
