    Filming with DSLR

Anybody use their DSLR to video their family activities or hunting? Pros cons vs a good video camera?

    I have a Nikon D3100 with with the kit lenses (18-55 and 55-200 I believe).also have a fixed 35mm.

I also have a Canon Vixia that I took on trade, but really need to find some funds to cover some medical bills with my back, so thinking about selling.

My filming would just be for personal use and the occasional sharing on here or YouTube. Nothing real fancy.

I have used my D3100 to video many time. It takes HD video so the quality is very good.

Major cons. Unless they have started making DSLRs better than when I bought my last Nikon, they don't auto focus, so you are connnnnnstantly having to either hold down the shutter button half-way, or turning the manual focus wheel on your lens if it has one. Press the shutter too hard and the camera thinks you want it to stop recording and take a photo.

I find it very annoying. The video quality is good, and the ability to zoom is awesome, but the focus problem is a total deal-breaker for me. DLSRs are just not meant to be dedicated video cameras.

It's not easy but can yield stellar results.

          Here are some of mine.

Some gopro footage here at the first but the action was shot with my DSLR. Low light and I didn't have my video tripod head...kinda jerky.

I loved shooting video on my canon 70d. I love shooting video on a dslr especially since you can change lenses for what you're shooting.

I have done some filming on my DSLR (Sony A72) and find it excellent for subjects that are not moving too quickly. The focus is the hardest thing and even with auto focus you are often better staying in manual so the camera doesn't jump focus between the subject and background

I film with my Nikon 5100. Video quality is great, sound quality with the built in mic sucks.
