Yep. Great idea for shipping, especially. I'm very comfortable with a metal lens hood for protection during use (and no no filter), but a box is likely to get beat to pieces during shipping.
It happened to my lens in a camera bag. I don't know if my kid climbed on it or what, but one day I pulled it out and the cap was stuck in the lens like your picture. I forced the cap out and the filter was shattered underneath.
