Recommendations ??

Let me start by saying I know nothing about photography, but I have enjoyed taking pictures on vacations, hunting trips, ect. I now have a baby on the way and my wife and I are wanting to buy a good camera. I would really like to take up photography as a hobby also.

I am wondering what camera the G/S would suggest as starter (I will understand the features). I am wanting to photograph family, sports, and the outdoors. My budget is relative I will go up to as much as $1500 but if a $500 camera will do the trick I'd be happy too.

My suggestion would be to find a good used body and a decent lens like a 17-50mm. This is a good, wide, everyday range that will give you the ability to take landscape photos as well as portraits. You can get the feel for it, without breaking the bank, before you make the next leap to longer glass for wildlife.

Look for a good Canon 7D, 60D, 70D that isn't worn out and think about the 17-55 f2.8IS. I think that's a great combo for a beginner.

Oh, and buy "Understanding Exposure" and memorize it.
