    White hummingbird - side notes

I went back yesterday to try for more pics of the bird with the teleconverter. The result wasn't good but I will give it one more shot this afternoon if the light is bright and see if I get a different result. My next use of it will be to shoot the moon. If it does not perform the way I want it will probably be returned.

There was another photographer there yesterday that had some impressive equipment. Two Canon 1DX FF bodies. Mounted on them were the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens He swears by this lens and I had to believe him since that is what was on each body. I have actually been reading up on this lens for the past week and it was nice to see, in person, someone using the lens instead of internet reviews. He also told me that extension tubes would serve me better on my lens than the teleconverter FOR the hummer shots. Here is the guy's website and some of the white hummer shots he got yesterday. http://www.drspencermoorephotography...2047&k=gf5GWjF

I have actually been considering going after the Tamron and selling the 100-400. Not sure where I'll end up with that though.

I would love to see one of these at my feeders. I wonder if this is a black chinned or a ruby throat? I had my first Ruby male show up yesterday evening.
All the rest have been black chinned.
          Great pictures BTW

His pictures are quite a lens endorsement.

Bill, one of the photographers that was at Cher's yesterday was discussing his new Tamron 150-600mm on FB. He said that while he was there shooting the white hummingbird, he was getting some tips from Spencer, who mentioned that he had had to micro adjust the focus for both of his lenses. I had never heard of micro adjusting focus, so I Googled and found this...

I can understand how a very precise focus could be especially important with a long lens that's used frequently with large aperture settings.

David I have read some about micro adjustments and it seems I remember it depends on the camera body as to whether you can do that or not. Of course with the bodies that Doc was using I know he can. I can do it with the 70D but not the 60D. I'm sure Casey can do it with his new body as well.

My 50D, 7D and 5DIII all have micro adjustment capabilities. I went through all my lenses on the 5D and adjusted them using the Dot Tune method. Very easy and I'm confident things improved for me.

Thanks Casey, I have looked at that and it's as far as I've gotten. The 50D can be micro adjusted but the 60D can't short of sending it to Canon with a lens on it.

Casey, I have some questions about the dot-tune method.

I haven't tried it yet, but a couple of things I was wondering about...

For a zoom lens, say 70-200mm, should I set the lens on 70mm, 200mm or the mid-point (135mm) for the best results?

Can this be done for lens/TC combinations? For instance, could I microadjust the combination of my 300mm prime plus my 1.4x TC (420mm)?

                          Thanks!

                            David,
On the 5DIII there is a T and W microadjustment. T (telephoto) is for the long end and W (wide) for the short end. You set the adjustment for each.

I would assume you can use the teleconverter on a lens and it's the same as adjusting for a "different" lens. I have not tried it though. I will eventually give it a shot.

Thanks, Casey. I'm going to try this starting with the 300mm prime. There is a noticeable and significant loss of sharpness when I add the 1.4x TC. To the point where I don't even want to use it. But I'm hoping that if I microadjust the combination, that problem may be solved.
