    Camera speed question

My wife and I are looking for a new point and shoot with strong zoom but the biggest problem we have with our current one is when you push the button to take a pic, it takes a long time to actually snap the photo so you don't catch what you were hoping to (i.e. a quick 2 year old son)

As we look at different cameras, what do they reference that action as?...ISO?, etc.?

thanks for helping this severe amateur out!

That's one of the drawbacks of point and shoot cameras. There may be one that doesn't have the delay, but I don't know of one. Some are worse than others. It would be great if there was a credit card sized camera that took the freakin' picture when you push the button. Maybe somebody knows of one. I'll be watching too.

it's called a shutter delay and it's a deal killer for lots of people.

        This sums it up .....

If you go to DPreview they have a ratings section for point and shoot cameras that measure the timing of this delay.

Right now a zero delay PNS camera doesnt exist. Some will allow you to pre-focus and then snap the pic fairly quickly.

I REALLY like the Panasonic DMC-FZ18K for BIG zoom ( 18x!) I used a friend of mines during our cruise and it took really great photos.

Example from cruise, just resized with zero photoshop...

Here is a 100% crop from the image above! The detail is amazing...

Here is another one just resized with zero photoshop. I didnt take this one but wished I did.

If I wanted a BIG zoom P-N-S camera, that is the one I would lean to.

Yep, one of the biggest obstacles with with a p&s.

The other is high depth of field at every f/stop. It's very hard to get a nice blurred background.

I use a Canon S5 and according to the specs, it wakes up and shoots in 1.3 seconds, with a shutter lag of 0.5 seconds in bright light and 0.8 second low light.

ABSOLUTLEY NOT....bought my wife the cool pix, and it actually may be the slowest camera ever. Upload times between shots is grueling as well...

I agree with the slow speed of the cannon. My wife has one and it is very slow compared to other brands.
