D-300 users; the mirror up feature is bad to the bone!

I was playing around with some "read your manual" stuff and ran across a "mirror up" shooting mode. It is awesome!

This is shot, 100+ yards, hand held sigma 170-500 at 500mm, shot in .jpg fine

    f/18 - 1/1250 ISO 1600

Now, knowing this lens at 500mm and a free hand held shot, there is no way possible to hold it with this much crispness.

The trick is the mirror up mode. Your click freezes the frame, your second click releases the mirror. Try it! I am thinking I am going to get a LOT crisper pictures with this option. Just for distance, this first shot is at 200mm

I've read that moon photography can make good use of the mirror lock up feature as well. Kinda like "manual image stabilization".

Darn crisp for 500mm Danno. Good stuff!

I am reading all I can on moon photography now Shane. Stacie and I will be on white sand beaches the week of the full moon! I am hoping to get some orange moon rise photos across the Caribbean. I am hoping it happens the 15,16 while we are at Culebra

All of my moon shots were done with the mirror lock up. It works well for getting that last bit of camera shake caused by the mirror slamming open and closed, out of the camera when shooting at longer focal lengths.

You can get good use out of it on a 500mm lens, Danny.

Dang kids. Mirror lockup has been a feature on SLR's since the 70's.

            Nice pics Danny.

I read somewhere else that Don invented mirror lock up.

LOL, I didn't invent it, but I did build a pinhole box camera in college. We also had to mix chemicals and create our own glass plates to be used for negatives in a homemade camera.

I'm not really as old as Devin would have you believe, but I have played with some of the really old photo technology.
