I can't believe I don't have one already, but I've finally come to the conclusion that I need a tripod. I want one that I can carry out in the field attached to a backpack. What do use? What do you recommend? I'm hoping I can go cheap on this, I have a flash I'm eyeing as well, so economical choices are appreciated.

If you're talking about something to carry while hunting, a monopod is easier to move around, lighter than the tripod, less confining and faster to set up. A tripod will always be steadier but a monopod has a lot of other advantages. I have a velbon monopod that comes with a shoulder strap.
I also have a fluid head tripod for video and photography. It's not too heavy to carry to a stand, but I wouldn't want to be running with it through the woods.

Whatever you get, make sure that you think about the quick release aspects. In other words, if you get a tripod and want a monopod later, get one that you know you can use the same quick release plates on when you get the monopod. I have a manfrotto tripod and monopod. I can switch my camera from one to the next without unscrewing the quick release plate. These are the models I use:
My tripod is very similar to this one:
with this head (at least an older model of it):
I also own an extra one of these (1 for my SLR, 1 for my 70-200 F2.8 lens, 1 for my video camera):
