    Ground Squirrel

    These little guys seem to have made homes in all the feed pens.

        Nope that is a ground squirrel, to big for a chipmunk. Shot a lot of these when I was growing up, make a really neat trilling sound when they are telling there buddies that you are there.

                    I have also seen one of those, they are quite a bit bigger than the ground squirrels, the one I saw was actually a little bit bigger than a regular tree squirrel. The ground squirrels are a little smaller than a tree squirrel. At least for the ones I have dealt with.

                        Agreed, they are much larger.

                        I just shot two of them in Rocksprings this past August for my uncle (his ranch) to mount on a piece of really pretty Black Walnut tree trunk. He has a good amount out there so he asked my to pick two unique ones. I shot one that had a goldish colored back-half; instead of the regular grey. The next one I killed for him had all sorts of red markings up and down his upper half including a dime sized red spot in the middle of her forehead.
