    Nikon d40 question

Anyone on here have a Nikon D40 I bought one at a garage sale for cheap but won't focus. It acts like its the lens. I would rather try someone else's lens before I drop the cash on a new one. If that's the problem I'll for sure spend the money. Thanks in advance.

I'm a Canon shooter, but remember looking at the D40 when I was deciding on a new one way back then. It could be that the lens that's on it can't autofocus on that body. For example, if it's an AF or AF-D lens, it won't autofocus. Take a look here for compatibility.

It could also be a bad lens.

Yep try someone else's lens first. It has to be a motorized lens to auto focus on the d40

Is there a switch on the lens to turn the auto-focus off/on?

Take a look at the picture below. See the "A M" switch? That's the autofocus/manual switch.

Yes I have the auto focus on the side. It will only focus at certain distance. I can remember if it was close or far I'll have to look but only one works.

There is a limit on how close you can be and still focus be it auto or manual.
