Ranch Pics and Duck ID Help

Took a drive around the ranch last weekend, and got some cool pics.

Here are the ducks. Anyone know what kind they are?

Great shots. That's a blue wing teal drake and hen. The drake is the pretty one.

Are they very common? That's the first one I've seen on our place.

North of Matador, TX....once part of the Matador Ranch, back in their hay-day.

yes they are common in that area, but only during specific times of the year. Typically they are on a bee-line down to the coast for the winter, so in your area you would see them in september on their way down to the coast and in may on the way back up north. They move thru that area pretty quickly. Had some on a pond in Kent County last year about this time, and had some on a pond north of Childress last weekend as well.

Good looking drake for sure. I don't get to see many of those in full plummage up here.

Blue wings are one of the few ducks that you will see come back thru after winter. Beautiful ducks. When we had our beach cabin down at Crystal Beach they would fill the little canals in the neighborhood each year around spring break. I often thought of popping one with a pellet gun just to mount.

There are two dugouts on the property. This one is the most intact. Every big rain that comes through caves them in a little more. Although, that hasn't been a problem the last couple of years.

From what I've learned the Matador Ranch cowboys built them for outpost when working cattle.

Might have looked something like this

The National Ranching Heritage Center is a museum and a 19-acre historical park located on the northern boundary of the Texas Tech University campus. The historical park is wheelchair and stroller accessible. Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Outdoor park closes at 4 p.m. daily (no park entry after 3:30 p.m.) Closed on all Texas Tech holidays.
