    Looking for starter rig

My 13 year old really wants a good camera for Christmas.

I'm looking for a good starter rig for him, he is very responsible so I don't mind spending some coin but don't want to drop a grand on a passing fancy either.

I'm interested in suggestions as well as what you have available.

I would look at the Canon Rebel models.... I have a XSi, it has produced some great photos for a starter body.... Not sure what you would want to do about the lens, you may want to just get the kit and let him start with a kit lens before dropping too much cash...

I have used B&H in the past and they are a great company. Here is the same camera as the link above at Cameta.com. You get a lot of little extras for just a few more bucks. They are a great company to deal with as well.

Thanks for the ideas, I guess the shopping has begun so what will his "must have" accessories include?

I'd agree with this. I started with an XSi as well, and had I not received an extremely nice gift from a family member (7D), I'd still be shooting with the XSi. T3 would be a great gift, and the 18-55 is a great lens to start with, use and learn with. You can also add a 50mm 1.8 (nifty fifty) as an extra lens. It's around 100 bones, and it takes great photos. After that, get a nice bag, extra battery and cards.... and go take pictures!

When I first bought mine, I figured out real fast I needed a tripod or monopod ( actually bought both), extra battery, and extra cards. I also pocked up a lowepro sling style bag to carry everything in.
