BigThicketBoy - go to B&H and look in their used store under DSLR - they typically have good deals on entry level dslr's in good condition. You can look at the Canon Rebel line or Nikon D40/60/70.
Codie - have you read Understanding exposure by Bryan Peterson? Buy this book and when you get it take it, your camera and the owners guide for your camera out and try to replicate the shots/settings Bryan uses as examples in his book. Obviously not the composition of the photo itself but the settings - when the photo lingo gets to thick revert to your owners guide for explanation. For me that was the most effective way to learn - it takes practice and experimentation - have fun with it though.

B&H Photo - Used Store Nikon DSLR
I would look strongly at the D200 - in the price range you listed you will be better off with the faster 5fps over the 3fps of the D80/60 for sports shooting.
Also, if video is something you would also look at the D90.Last edited by chongo; 10-20-2011, 11:39 AM.
