    Thinking of Canon

I'm thinking of letting some of my Olympus Equipment go and going with Canon. If you had $4,500 to spend on a body and two lenses, what would they be? Need one long lens.

Thanks, Bill! I am some"body" and I always refer to my boys as my "two lenses"! We want to take a vacation to Grand Cayman so you giving us $4500 will make that happen! I'll even take the ole bag with us. (Please, no one tell Audra I called her an old bag! I am not worried though, if we take her with us to Grand Cayman, she'll forgive me. LOL) I'll PM you my address so you can send me the $4500, I prefer cash, but I'll take a check from you.

        7D $1700
        17-55 f2.8 IS $1100
        Canon 300 f4L IS $1400
        Total: $4200

        60D $1000
        17-55 f2.8 IS $1100
        Canon 300 F4L IS $1400
        Total: $3500

The 70-200 F2.8L IS II is an unbelievable lens for $2500. Try it instead of the 300 in the second combo for a total of $4700.

The 100-400, as mentioned, is a nice lens. Les has one. $1700.

Who or what is this bag you are talking about Keith? I know it's not your lovely wife.

I think I could live with the F4 in the long lens as long as it was IS. What exactly does the "L" designation mean?

Is the 60D an equivalent to the Nikon D90, which would be an equivalent to my E-30.

          Thanks for the replies.

Not sure what "L" stands for, other than love. I love my L lenses. BUT, that 17-55 I mentioned should be an L, because it flat performs, but it is not an L. L is just the high end "white" Canon Lenses, typically. Some are black with a red ring.

The 60D is not equivalent to the D90, because it is a Canon which makes it better.

Honestly, without comparing functions, I can't tell you what is it's equivalent. I just know it does a great job, as does it's predecessor, the 50D, which I drive.

I have heard it said the 300mm F4 L IS is one of the best wildlife lenses. Drop a 1.4x teleconverter on it and you have a 420mm f5.6 with IS. That's actually a bit better than the 100-400 f4.5-f5.6L. I've gotten good results from the lens and the combination.

From the 300mm on my 50D.

I have the 17-55 and the 100-400 and really like both. I also have the 10-22 and I really like it. I also have the 70-200mm f4. This is a great lense but I want to get the 2.8 version.

                        "L"
Canon L lenses use a special formula for the glass and grind them a bit differently than the cheaper stuff. There was a promotional video around about a year ago.
I'd do the 60D with Casey's smaller lens and rent longer lenses until you find what works best for your needs.
Fred Miranda is a great site to read reviews and see the results.

Another designation question, what is EF and EF-A I believe it was? Thanks.

                            For people:

                            Canon 5D Mark II - $2500
                            24-70L - $1400
                            200L 2.8 - $800
                            Total - $4700

                            For hunting:

The 7D package Casey said is good.

The 5D really performs for portrait and landscape work.

If you really want to blow the budget go with the 5D and an 85mm 1.2L. Perfection for people shots...

The 7D that Casey mentioned is a great one. I have that one and the 17 - 55mm plus the 70 - 200 f/2.8. It is IS but it is not the II. Not sure if the price difference between the two are worth the money. I have not looked into it at all but I can tell you I love the Canon 7D and the two lenses. Good Luck Bill
