Beginner Camera Advice

Wife is asking for a "Nicer" camera, (i.e. better than a 12 mp cool pix), for Christmas this year, she has no experience with "Nicer" cameras Looking to spend anywhere from $600-$1000. Any suggestions? Would be used for primarily family pics and hopefully LDP's
