    Flash Advice

Hey guys not very camera savvy but the wife is. I bought her a D60 last year and now she wants one of those external flashes. What is the best one for that camera.

Two real options in my opinion. An Sb400 or SB600. The decision comes down to size, cost, and what you need it for. The SB400 is nice because it is small and about $100 cheaper than the other. The advantages over the pop up are more power, faster recycling and the ability to bounce off of a ceiling for better looking pictures. The SB600 has much more power, bounces and rotates so you can bounce it off a ceiling while taking a portrait oriented picture as well. The SB600 also has controls on the flash so you can adjust without going through camera menus. The SB600 will also work as a slave if you upgrade cameras or get an SB700/900 (much more expensive) in the future. I bought an SB400 and later got an SB600. I would recommend the 600 as an all around flash, unless size is a big concern.

I shoot with the SB800 on my D700. The SB400 is a cool little flash but I would highly recommend picking up an SB600 or 800 on the used market. You can find them in excellent condition very reasonably priced.
The most important advice I would give you regarding flash is to get it "OFF" the camera. I am not sure if you can shoot the SB400 off-camera but the others mentioned you can.

Thanks guys it is greatly appreciated. I checked into the SB600 and it is well within what I wanted to spend. Thanks for the link TexasBob. I am going to check into the 800 also. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have a pair of SB-900's and they are awesome with the Pocket wizards. Very expensive though.
