    What about this lens?????

I am looking for a good night shot, indoor, low light all around lens and am leaning towards the Wide angle 24-70 f2.8 L lens, I already have the 70-300 IS USM lens for the longer shots and now need a good, sharp wide angle lens .....

This dude cost some coin and I don't want to buy the wrong lens for what I am expecting it to do, so what is the opinion of the TBH brain trust????

If the Canon 24-70 f2.8 L is as sharp as the Nikon version, you will love it! The performance of my 24-70 f2.8 is only eclipsed by my 70-200 f2.8. It's worth the jingle IMHO.

Thanks for the input Scotty, in your opinion is this a good lens choice for what I mentioned doing with it??? Night Photos (Christmas lights, etc), Indoors, low lighting, etc...

I kind of expected really clear crisp photo's with it being L glass anyhow but really curious as to the low light ability of the lens....

Rent one before you buy. Test it out in the low light conditions.

Every picture in this set was shot with the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lens. For it's range, it is a rather large and heavy lens, but it takes incredibly clear pictures and I probably shoot as many pictures with it as with all my other lenses combined. I have no regrets buying that lens.

Great pic's David.... Although I believe I will rent the lens, I am still very intested in your opinion of how that lens perform for night shots, Christmas lights, etc????

It's a great lens, no doubt.
But for another option? Try looking an at short range ultra wide. I have a tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and it is remarkabe once you get thr feeling of using it.
Go to my flicker page and search my tokina 11-16 set.

Just another option to look at and it is 1/3 of thr cost.

I checked it out Hill, you have some great photo's in all your sets, I do like the wide angle of the 11-16..... I also looked at the 50mm set you had and that also looks like it would do what I am wanting as well... Now that I know about the lensrentals I think I am going to rent a few lens before making up my mind!!!!! Give em each a try and go from there...... Thanks for sharing the info and the photo's...

I would recommend the 50mm 1.4 based on your post.

Thanks for the info Kevin, after seeing some of Hill's photo's with her nifty fifty, I think I need to rent it and give it a try..... I have been looking around and have found that lens to be not too terribly expensive but it gets mixed reviews....

Get a 50 and an ultra wide for half the price of the 24-70 and have one killer collection in your bag.

It does all that very well. I have three "L" series lenses and they all perform extraordinarily well, much better than the photographer in my case. I don't even pretend that my skill level can justify this kind of expense, but I'm at a stage in life where I can drop a lot of cash on toys and not feel guilty. I'm not going to kid you, the "L" lenses are just flat out kick booty! If you can afford that level of quality and still buy all the ranges of lenses you need, then by all means go for it. If you need to be more budget minded, you might not even want to try L glass, because it will sure spoil you in a hurry!

I'm just not a fan of ultra-wide angle photography. For one thing, I don't enjoy looking at pictures with the fisheye kind of distortion that makes straight lines appear curved. Maybe someday I will be "into" that. But right now, I just don't have much desire to go much wider than 24mm. I have a lot more use for the longer ranges. So my second L lens is a 70-200mm f/2.8L with image stabilization. And I have two telephoto extenders for it, a 1.4x and a 2.0x, which enables me to get up to 400mm focal length. I also LOVE my 50mm f/1.2L and if I need a super-sized aperture for low light, that's what I generally reach for.

Best wishes in whatever you decide.
