Ok so now that I've pulled the trigger on a nice camera I'm interested in some software. Just comparing prices the Lightroom 2 is a heck of a lot cheaper than Photoshop CS4 (I know there is a v3 coming). From a purely amateur base will Lightroom be a good start? What are the main differences in the two? I've done some research but want to hear from folks who use the programs. Thanks~

Im really partial to Photoshop i just love all the stuff you can do in it but at the same time Lightroom has some good traits that i like to use on portriats. Just with photoshop there is so much that you can do it can sometimes be overwhelming in my opinion. But after many many long nights playing around on it i dont think you will personally go back to anything else. also i dont know if you have kids or family members that have kids in college but if you do you can have them buy it at there campus for much much cheaper, thats what i did at Tech and will prob do again when the next version of Photoshop comes out.

I'm really thinking Lightroom will be more my speed. I'm not looking at doing any kind of major processing. I will look in to the student purchase. When I was in school I don't think Photoshop was one of the programs we could purchase but maybe they've added it by now. I'll check with some folks and see what I can find out. Appreciate the information.

I bought mine through an educational discount place. I think it was this one, but I can't remember for sure. Same price though - $99

You have to send proof that your child is a student or that you or your spouse works at a school/college.
