    Decisions...

I really want to get the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 based on Hilly's recommendations and a lot of other folks. I figure that combined with the 1.4 TC would be capable of turning out some very high quality images at distance.

    But man-o-man that's a lot of coin!

So.... I found a Nikon Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm VR F4.0-5.6G IF ED for about 1/5th the price - $400 in mint condition. Now I wrestle with purchase of this until the coin is saved for the 70-200VR.

I have a few airshows planned for 2010 so the f/4.0-5.6 doesn't scare me so much in that it'll be sky shots (bright) and most probably panning with the aircraft not requiring really fast shutterspeeds.

Did anybody else start out with this approach? Buying a lens as a stop-gap until the funds could be had for the one that was REALLY on the wish-list? Would this be a normal progression to migrate that way? Better alternatives out there?

I need some help on this one!

Scott, for daylight shots, and where you don't need a shallow DOF, the 70-300 will do you just fine. Me, I just saved and saved!
Nikon and Canon glass hold their value pretty well.
