I love my Nikon D40! Got it as an anniversay gift. My fiance bought it online from butterflyphoto.com but you could also check out b&hphotovideo.com or buydig.com. Or if you would rather buy in person Best Buy usually has some good prices.

There are a lot of really good digital cameras available today. Deciding on one depends on what type pictures she wants to take. I have an older Canon Digital Rebel. It takes excellent pictures. It is however a large camera and taking it some places is just not very convenient. I have a small Nikon Coolpix camera that fits in a pocket and has a higher megapixel resolution. it works great, but does not have the versatility of the Rebel. My best advice would be to go look at lots of cameras and learn about them and try them out before making a purchase. Years ago I purchased a digital Olympus camera for my wife, bad mistake, it was slow at taking pictures and the menu was terrible. My wife never used it.
      Hope this helps.

Here is another link for Nikon info. Better than Ken Rockwell by far. (KR is a nut)
I agree that the Nikon D40 is a great starter camera.

My canon is great. A good starter rig is the rebel package from e bay. It has all she will need and won't desrtoy your bank acount.
