Photoshop question

I'm looking to get some photoshop information....

What would be the best version to get for an amatuer photographer? How much should/will it cost? and where is the best place to buy the program from?

Also, is there another program that might work better for a smaller price?

If you are a student or a parent of a student, there are places where you can order softwares for a fraction of the full price by sending them a copy of a current student ID. I recently bought my daughter the Photoshop CS4 Design Standard (sells on Amazon for $1,354.49) for $209.

I bought Lightroom at a student discount place for $99. That's the way to go. $209 for CS4 is an awesome deal, David!

I had previously used Photoshop Elements 7 and switched to Lightroom. I'm loving it!
