New Camera - Nikon D5000

We just bought my wife a Nikon D5000 as an early Christmas gift so she could get some good shots of our 6 month old son at his first Thanksgiving.

We really haven't gotten the chance to play with it much at home yet, but I am sure there will be lots of trial and error. Anyone use this camera and have any suggestions on must do's or definitely don't do's?

Any info is appreciated.

No experience with it, but I hear it is a good one.
Just keep shooting and keep it by your side.
