File size question

I normally shoot .jpg/fine with my D40x. File sizes have typically been in the 1.5-2.5MB range.

Friday I added a polarizing filter and focused on all the wonderful fall colors and bright sunshine/shadows we've had recently. File sizes for that shoot, still in .jpg/fine mode, are now in the 5MB range.

Is that just data packed in there for all the added colors and contrasts? I hadn't really thought about it much, but the file size difference is noteworthy.

So maybe I need to clarify the question......

Yes, I know the data is packed in there for each image. The question should be:..... with exremlely more colors through the range with lots of colors and contrast, would that be the cause of the increased file sizes noted for this shoot?
