This is one of the more frequent situations I get called to track on. It’s not always intentional, but sometimes the tendency is to aim too far forward on a quartering - away deer. And this is what that looks like:

The arrow never even penetrated the chest cavity.

It created a wound channel inside the shoulder that exited the lower neck.
Because of the huge cutting diameter on the expandable broad head, this was an easy recovery but many are not.

Yep, I made a rookie mistake. I ALWAYS use the offside leg to set my aiming point, but I inexplicably just settled the pin behind the shoulder and let it rip. I didn't examine the vitals, but I'm pretty sure I got one lung. I feel fortunate that I found her.

I really don't know how they can do it sometimes...that was a lot of blood loss & I would have passed out after the first cup!!

Couldn't count all the deer I've hit in same broadside boiler room area where about half drop & the other half make it no more than 25 yards...but on occasion you get that one that will go 75-100 & the carnage looks the same when cleaning??

I have seen a doe shot with the entrance wound right behind the shoulder but the arrow was in the body cavity length wise. Talk about weird!

They want to live so much more than we want them to die. Once that arrow is released, there is nothing we can due but track diligently.

Congratulations on the season ice break/streak continuerer.

May have missed it but what broad head were you using?

You are absolutely correct on both counts. Strangely enough, I'm pretty proud of this one, in part due to the effort required and also because it does continue the "streak"! My hunting situation has changed dramatically, so getting a deer on the ground in October feels good!
