If you see two green bars, it's on pause. Don't know if you have that on your DSLR or not. Just sayin'... with different equipment, maybe you wouldn't suck!
There's a little red dot on the screen when it's recording on the DSLR too, but it's kinda small and at the very edge of the screen. I just got in a hurry because I knew my battery was about dead. I hit a button and didn't check to make sure it was actually recording before I grabbed my bow and drew back for the shot.

It's not bad at all when I'm filming somebody else and not trying to do two things at once myself. But the DSLR really isn't the best tool for self-filming hunts.

Your still more talented than me. I get so caught up in the shot, I don't hit the record button or I'm fooling with the camera and don't have the opportunity to take the shot.

Awesome Shane. The captions make it great. Thanks for showing it. Definitely something I would do.

The one thing I have a doubt about the DSLR cams is the audio. I've worked with those cams some, and every time we'd have to mic up with a lapel mic and record separate audio to an SD card in the receiver...then sync up the audio in editing.

Anyone have any input on the audio of their DSLR cams?

I have an external mic that's very nice. I didn't use it on this trip though. If you run a good shotgun mic or lapel mic into a preamp and then into the camera it's great. A lot of pros use a separate sound recorder for even higher quality and control and then sync it up in processing. I'm not that serious about it.

I am using a firmware hack program called Magic Lantern on my camera. You load it onto your memory card, and it adds LOTS of features to your camera that are very helpful for video. One of its features is a sound meter. It also has a sound booster/amplifier that comes in handy. Too bad I forgot to turn that on this trip too.
