    Purchasing a Video Camera

I want to get a video camera to film hunts, outdoor activities, family events, short videos etc., Maybe do a little editing on the computer. I've done a little bit of research, but not sure as to what to look for in a camera...I know one that is good in low light is a must for hunting, but I'm really lost as to what I should be looking for, anybody have any help with this?? Thanks in advance..

Get a Canon or Sony MiniDV with a 10-20x optical zoom. Ignore the digital zoom numbers, they're useless.

http://www.bhphoto.com is a great place to shop.

Also make sure that you actually play with the camera before you purchase...one of the common issues with proconsumer or consumer cameras is the beep or chirp at startup. If you can't disable you will scare alot of game off simply turning on or starting to record.

Most cameras allow you to turn off the beep and any red lights in their menu.

What model do you have Peyton? I see this one and it seems reasonably priced and in my price range... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Camcorder.html I've also read where a remote comes in handy, what are your takes on that?

The HC52 is a good camera. The 40x optical zoom is awesome!

A remote will allow you to control the camera without reaching up to hit record or zoom. They're handy

Well my Birthday is coming up so I was going to ask the gf for that for my birthday but if it was going to be to expensive I was going to help her out. I don't know really I say no more than like 300 or so? Does this sound reasonable?? Definitely not the 1000's like the one you have... I'm not made of money just yet lol

Most people that walk into a walmart or even Best Buy these camera's are not going to allow for that function especially in the mini dv format or even in some of the harddrive versions. The lower end the camera the less functions. Now if you are in the GL2 category of cameras...ie more pro consumer you have better options. Its something you want to check on every camera as you will be shocked that not all have the ability to turn the chime off out of standby.

also be aware of the format that the camera records in if using hardrive or sd card versions...very few editing softwares allow for the native import of these files and can lead to plain frustration. Peyton brings a great question as to how much you want to spend....

i have a Sony Handycam HDD. It has 60gb of storage which is 41 hours of videao or 14 hours of HD video. Easy to use Carl Zeiss optics touchscreen and compact. Was about $600-700 2 years ago but we love it. Good battery life can take still pictures from video you've already taken.

I would consider the Canon ZR960 too, it has Image Stabilization. The Sony has Night Shot. Both great cameras.
