    Help me plan a week

In two weeks, I go to the Junco to fill feeders and check cameras, friday through Sunday morning. The next weekend, I plan on being in San Angelo to fill feeders and check cameras. I have the week in between open. I WANT AN AXIS. I've had the bug to kill one for a while. I don't know if I can book anything on short notice, but how about some ideas on where to look. I want a good, representative animal or at least a chance at one.

    Suggestions?

Bill Watson. South Hills Ranch. 830.279.9451. He's got one close to 40 inches I've been trying to kill off and on for a couple years, John. If you declare you're only going to shoot the big one you'll have nice bucks all over you. His place is south of Utopia so it'd be a little out of the way, but it's bowhunting only and you couldn't find a nicer or more knowledgeable guy with good accomodations. Has a whitetail breeder's license and you guys could trade notes for days. Mention Rick Thompson. Good luck.

LOL, Clint. I think the bear ate everything with spots.

Does he have a web site, Ricky T?

I have always wanted to hunt the South Hills Ranch. Seems like a great operation.

            Doesn't say anything about axis.

RickyT....I saw your brute of a whitetail on the website. What's the score/story?

Bill doesn't have a huge Axis population so he doesn't advertise them. They're there mainly as a bonus during deer season but they've gotten wise over the years and are tough to get in front of in the winter. Right now they're fairly patternable and he's got enough to keep you busy. Just a pretty place with lots of game.

Chew, the buck that's on there now is an eight point we called Crabclaw that I took on video after five days of looking for something bigger. He doesn't score all that well, right at 130, but I shot him with a finger bow and he jumped straight up like a jackrabbit before he took off. Great hunt. Thanks for reminding me.

                Hey TD,
I know of a couple places that might be able to help you. I can PM with more info or you can call me at the shop (512) 716-0649. Both have really good axis, and one of these places may look familiar to you. The phone will be the best way to get ahold of me today. Oh, and the other place is between Brady and Angelo.

                  Chance,

Doc is at work today, but I am sending him a text message to call you at your office. He will probably be very interested in the place between Brady and San Angelo, since he is going to the ranch.

Of course, the place that may look familiar to him will bring back lots of good memories, most of his exotic encounters happened there...

                      He says he does...

He has been wanting a good Axis with his bow for a while, I hope he gets on one soon!!!

Chance, do you have a place to drop deer-heads on the weekends? I am looking for a decent taxidermist, you wouldn't happen to know one, would you???

I normally come down 29 out of Llano and either hit 35 in Georgetown, or take 29 down to 95 and 95 over to 290 in Elgin. Nothing pressing just making plans for this upcoming season, should be a banner year with the New Guardian!!!
