plain old cane will work,, not as tall as bamboo but will get very thick,, impossible to walk through, or see through

Some of these suggestions you need to be careful with. Try to go with natives and depending on your tolerance for toxicity - watch out for oleanders (toxic, causes heart failure if the leaves are consumed) and the cherry laurel, which is probably the most toxic plant in the state. It is an evergreen, but both green and dried leaves and fruits contain high levels of cyanide and will kill most anything that puts a berry or leaf in its mouth.
Oleanders will freeze in the winter and die back but they are hardy.
I, too, would avoid the bamboo because it is not a native and nearly all non-natives end up causing problems.
