It looks like its a bright spot from some of the grass that he is walking through. Over to the right there is a spot in the pic that looks the same. I don't think it would be that bright if it was a hole, how would it. The sun is at the back of the deer not on the ground. IMO holes in deers ears look dark.

How many different angles am I going to have catch the deer for it be a hole? ;-)
First picture was morning sun out of the east. Second was evening sun out of the west. "Hole" in same spot in same ear both times. Heckuva coincidence. It's a Hole! Lol

I am going to say missed poach attempt. In the last pic you posted you can see a half circle missing on the opposite ear, quite possibly the bullet path. I was looking for it on the other pics, but looks like you can see it in that last pic.
