Since we are about to hit the month of Aug figured I would start a thread about what everyone is planting for their fall plots. We didn't get a spring plot in this year but are starting to work on the fall plots here real soon. Going to get our soil samples sent off, disc the ground a little and spray the weeds. Not 100% sure what we are going to plant this year but I do know that I am putting some kale out. Might go with the fall blend from MBS seed in Denton. It has Oats, Wheat, Rye and Austrian Winter Peas in it. Planning to plant sometime around the 1st of Sept. So what are you all going to plant and when?

I don't like to use mixes or blends, as the seed sizes are very different and need different planting depths to do well. Larger the seed, deeper it needs to be planted, clover seed needs minimal coverage, if any.
Planting wheat, oats and elbon rye together, then rolling them in and over seeding with Crimson clover and Apache Arrowleaf clover.

Going to do a few things. Going to do a small Oats plot with WI Forage Oats. Then going to do a field edge with some cheap seed I picked up last year, that is a mixture of Oats, Rye, Clover, Raddish. If it doesn't grow this spot will still be good so it's a freebie spot for me. I have a clover/chicory spot going, I am going to expand it with Kale.
I am sure a bit of each will make it to all the plots, just to add variety. I am spraying with Round Up now, hoping not having to disc this in Sept.

I tried the turner fall season mix last year. It was ok but as stated before the various seed sizes made me have to average what depth to plant. I am going to plant a forage oats, Triticale, and arrow leaf clover. I might try chicory and alfalfa just haven't made up my mind. I do know I will not plant radishes this year.

I know in the past we tried on of the mixes and tried to disc it in and it was a failure. At the new ranch we went and bought a 9ft Culitpacker (approx 1000lbs) and was just wondering if broadcasting and running the Culitpacker over it will be enough. HAve zero experience with a cultipacker.

This year just about what I did last year. Elbon Rye, Durana Clover (if I need to replant), Siberian Dwarf Kale, Oats, Chicory. I am expanding my Kale area this year since they eat it down to nothing in a few weeks.
I don't till my fall plots. Just spray, broadcast, and cultipack.
Brandon the cultipacker is a great implement. For small seeds just spray, broadcast, and run the cultipacker over it. That's exactly what I do for fall....broadcast and pack. Some seeds are a little too big for this like oats and winter peas (they don't get great germination), but Rye, Clover, Kale, Radish, Turnips, Chicory work great with this method.
