    When to plant?

When should you start planting you spring/summer food plots here in N Texas and what are some good high in protein plants to put out?

april usually, around rain, although you can start prepping the area now with lime/fertilizer. soybeans and/or iron clay peas are good and cheap if you have a few acres, if not they will eat it before it comes up.

Soybeans and cow peas are great to plant. Check your soil temps....Soybeans need 60ish and cow peas need 65 degree temps to germinate. And if you can get warmer than that then all the better.

It may be later this year because of the winter we've been having!

Thinking of going with this mix from MBS seed in Denton.
Mixture of Iron & Clay Cowpeas, Red Ripper Cowpeas, Chinese Red Cowpeas Laredo Soybeans, Buckwheat, Mungbeans and White Game Milo

              Texas bound

Not familiar with that, but be careful of unknown seed blends. I got a bunch of noxious weed seeds in a " wildlife blend " I tried from my local feed store. Hard to get rid of !

Ok thanks for the tip. I will do some more research on the blend and see what others that have used it says.

This is what we plant every year. We plant it in SE Oklahoma and it does really well. The deer absolutely love the different Cowpeas. We plants about 30 acres and usually end up hunting over it all the way to the first hard freeze in october. We usually plant in April.

Thanks Q. I couldn't remember who had told me about MBS but now I remember it was you. I wish I was going to be able to plant it in OK lease. I had a great 1.5 acre spot for it.

Have to keep track of that mix as an option.

That does sound like a good mix. How much is the MBS mix per 50lb bag?

Not sure they don't have prices on their website.

if I read your comments correctly, u plan on 1 to 1 and 1/2 acres plot sizes. I don't know your deer population there but have hunted Oklahoma and I am hunting NE Texas. So I think with the size plots u mention and planting soybeans and cowpeas, I am pretty sure u will need to put up an electric fence or something like that or the deer will wipe it out in a couple of 2 or 3 days. It is better to feed the deer for 30 days over 2 or 3 days. My son planted purple hull peas and the deer wiped them out in couple days. And a 1 acre plot of cows peas 3 feet tall behind elec fence. I opened the plot up and it lasted me 30 days before they wiped them out. About the same with 5' Eaglebrand soybeans in 1 acre plot lasted about 30 days after I removed elec fence. Hope this information helps with your planting
