    Planting Sunflower Seed

What are y’all using to plant sunflower seeds? I have about 10 ac I’d like to plant for doves and have been thinking sunflowers and something else. I’ve been reading about planting sunflowers and it’s saying it needs 1-1.5” in the ground. I feel that as much as I read about this, not all of y’all are getting planters. I feel like I have everything needed but, a planter.

I did 2 acres in perodovik last year, and all I did was till, broadcast, and drug it with a drag. They came up nice and thick, but then the deer ate them all.....

Did 4 ac last year. Disc, spread seed & harrow over it. i planted hybrids ,because I got a late start. They came up good ,flowered out & deer ate them. LOL!
This last fall planted natives the same way. Disced, spread & harrow. My field is looking great. Sunflowers are coming up strong. Hope we keep getting some rain.

I planted Maximilian Sunflowers this year in a one acre plot for trial. I cannot plant peredovich or grey stripe in my area because of the hogs.

Disk, broadcast seed, then drag a harrow of some sort over them. I always had great luck planting the 50# bag sunflower bird seed from tractor supply.

I've planted perdovik sunflowers with a planter and also disc, broadcast and lightly disc again. Both worked great. You have to use more seed when you broadcast them but it will work no problem. I have a JD 71 row planter I got from a great TBHer that sure makes beautiful rows. The problem is keeping the deer from eating them.

I will be planting in 2 weeks so they are ready about August 15th. Perdoviks are 100 day maturity.

I picked up two bags of these yesterday to try. Thanks for the heads up, even if half of them don’t germinate I’m still money ahead.

I have to laugh. Years ago a buddy of mine had the start of a good stand. He scoffed when I asked how he was planning on keeping the cows off them….
All gone by the next week!

Did you plant these during the winter?
