    Forage oats vs regular oats

has anyone seen a difference between regular oats and forage oats. Deer around here don't seem to start eating regular oats til late december. Sure is a big price difference per bag

I have never planted anything but regular old whole oats and the deer always chow down on them after the first frost

I found them to brown out and get tough sooner than pasture oats from the local co-op.
I mix 50/50 oats and wheat and the deer like both.

Have always used whole oaks like you said they are cheaper than the seed oaks and always have a good stand.

The only difference is in the ability to survive freezes. As i undwrstand it, the Buck Forage oats were derived from a strain called 833 which was specifically developed to withstand harsh winters. However, you have to be the judge whether it is worth twice the cost.

Alot of people plant whole feed oats with great results.

Just buy Bob Oates seed. I would not buy seed if a deer company produces it. Just paying for their name.

I just bough regular oats this weekend. Not sure how they will do but we'll see.

I try to get a good variety of oats like harrison or dallas. these have a broad leaf, and work great while being cold hardy.

I believe Buck Forage Oats are SUPPOSED to have a higher germination rate vs. a "regular" oat. I'm not sold on that but that's what the feed store salesman tried to sale me on. I just figured I'd over seed with the lower rate germinating "regular" oat.

How much are regular oats going for. I bought 90 bags last weekend and I want to know if I got hosed.

justin are you talking feed oats or oat seed ? Feed whole oats range from $7 to $9 per bag, generally. Priced some Bob Oats at approx $15 and Buck Forage at $35.
