    Enough arrow for Nilgai?

So it looks like I've got an opportunity for a Nilgai hunt this fall and I'm wanting to use my bow. For the last 3 years I've been shooting a 2010 Martin Firecat at 70lbs. Haven't chrono'd my current setup but my arrows are smokin!

29" 7595 Gold Tips with 100gr Ramcats. On deer and hogs these are blowing through every time so far. I'm wondering though if I should think about adding a 100gr brass insert to up my weight, or if I should just stick with what I've got.

    Any thoughts?

I believe those are .300 spine. You might add the 50 grain brass and a 125 grain head. But Mudslinger shoots those arrows with I'm almost sure a 50 grain insert and a 100 RC. But I don't remember his arrow length right off. But yes increasing you FOC that much will help you out on a Nilgai.

I have killed two with a bow and pass throughs on both. One was a middle aged bull(not a monster) and one was a cow. I shot the bull with easton axis 340 and a black two blade Magnus and had a pass through. The cow was same arrow but a steel force 4 blade broadhead. I have been considering the same hunt. I would try to get an arrow weight of 450-500 grains and I would consider a good two blade or very solid three blade head. They are tough but I would say on par with elk or larger african plains game. I like ramcats but for nilgai I would personally shoot something a touch smaller and tougher. Ex vpa 3 blade, silver flame, helix, drt, hellrazor, etc.

Thanks for the advice guys. I figure my arrows with broadheads are hovering at the 400gr mark right now so the insert may be the way to go. I've got some magnus Buzzcuts on hand that would probably penetrate very well, and have performed well for me on deer in the past. I'd obviously rather go a little overboard in the event that I hit some bone.

Stingers are good heads but they can bend on the big stuff. The four blades are worse than the two blades because of the cut in the ferrule. Good luck, preparing is half the fun!

What about a mechanical like grim reapers?

Uhhh, NO! Will a mech work. Sure. If you tie into those massive shoulders with a mech? Not me.

Sorry, I don't shoot mechanicals at all, personal preference. I've had great luck with Buzzcuts, Hellrazors, Montecs and Ram Cats....I've got some Simmons Land Sharks that I've only shot targets with, but they are beasts!

Also think about ST mags or Viper Tricks.
