What is best safety harness for a ladder stand

I want to purchase a light weight safety harness that I can use anywhere and instead of leaving in my ladder stand. Most of those I have looked at seem to be geared toward pure tree stands.

Last year elk hunting in NM, I hunted out of a tree ladder stand, but the harness was so tangled and awkward, I was severely limited wearing it. But the stand was very high and there was no lean it - falling forward would have been easy.

So I want a harness that I can get to fit, but take anywhere and easily latch on once I climb up the ladder. Does anyone have any recommendations, including what to stay away from.

I may have posted this in the wrong forum but not sure which one I should have used. This one looks like it might be specific to bows and arrows only.

I used one of the muddy harness this year. It was light and not cumbersome. Should be able to use in a ladder or tree stand.

Something really stands out wrong about your post. Are you suggesting you put on your harness AFTER you climb up? You really should be putting on your harness before you climb up the tree. My setups have protection as I go up the tree, but even if I did not, I would still wear the harness as I climb the ladder and then instantly "clip" or "strap" in.

There are lots of options, I use a standard harness, but again, it's not a big deal when you put it on while on the ground like you are supposed to do.

Also, storing your harness in the tree is a very bad practice. Weather, animals, etc are going to wear on your harness. It should be kept in a dry place.

SwampRabbit, No, I want to put on the body harness part before I leave camp and if realistic.

The question is when I tie on or latch on. I guess I don't understand the concept of some of the harnesses used with climbing tree stands and how you would use with a ladder stand. So my assumption is that I would have the body harness on, but not latch on until I got into my stand.

I probably need to do some more reviewing to understand how you would use it as you were actually climbing up the ladder. Those I have seen to date were almost a part of the ladder stand itself - used more like a seat belt than a safety tether as you were actually climbing the ladder.

                Get a lifeline
It attaches to tree and hangs down to ground. They have Prusik knots that slide up and down as you go.
If you happen to fall, the knot cinches up and keeps it from sliding.
I'm pretty sure you can get a complete set from Muddy with everything you need.
If not, pm me and I know I can

I work in Industrial Iron work and OSHA standard say a harness must hold 5000 lbs weight. Leg loops should be tight and anymore than TWO minutes hang time can cause severe damage. I have seen this many time. The weight may sound high but when falling it takes less than 5 feet to put 5000 lbs pressure. I have an old harness from work I wear. Everyone should really look into to this, most deaths occur in less than 8 feet of falling. Great ? I hope more people look into this.

                      Another vote for Lifeline...

I just put steps in a tree, about 30 feet up. Lifeline is attached 30 feet off the ground and hangs right the ground. Hook the harness up, start climbing and pushing the Prusik knot up as you go. Will never let you fall more than a couple feet.

Coming down, reverse and unhook at the ground...

                      Safe and easy...

OK, so to clarify for those saying "lifeline", are you using that term generically or as a product. I found a "Hunter Safety Lifeline System Safety Harness (3-Pack)" that only works with Hunter Safety System harnesses. So I would presume I would secure one of those "lifelines" at each of my two ladder stands and latch on to it every time I went up and down.

Then if hunting in another ladder stand (one time), I may or may not use it, but I would still use my safety harness to tie in at the top.

Sorry to sound so dense on this, but all the harnesses I have seen in my short hunting career came with the ladder stand are almost part of it. They stay there in the stand and you just use it when you are up there, not to get up there or down.

In my simple way of looking at it, the lifeline has to be secured at the top already in order to be functional. So if I am elk hunting one evening out of tree stand that I will just be using the one time, I would not use the lifeline, correct?

lifeline works with any climbing harness. It is a rope with a prussik knot a caribeaner. You snap in and climb.

your idea of a seat strap is really dated. All tree stands, even ladder stands come with a climbing harness these days.

Thanks for the feedback folks. Will go try a couple of those on, figure out which one fits best and least restrictive and get one.
