    Heavy arrows

I've been playing with arrows. Just to see the difference in how the fly, speed and how the bow reacts to the heavier arrows, but now I need to go even heavier. I'm limited out to 700 gns. And that's with a 300 gn field point.
How do I build a heavier arrow with out breaking the bank. I found a easton arrow that's 17 gn per inch but I'm not going to pay that kind of money just to play around with.
I would like to get up to around 1500 gns plus. What would happen if I made one out of 1/4 round steal rod

First, what are you trying to accomplish? Second, why are you trying to do this?

Weight tubes will add weight, but not sure you will be able to get to the 1500 grains you want with just these.

Check out the deal on 3Rivers Archery® Arrow Weight Tubes at 3Rivers Archery Supply

Might want to look at adding sand inside to see what type of weight that will add. The tubes will only add 224 grains to a 28" arrow with the 8 gpi tubes.

Why the extreme weight, especially in the 1500 grain range. Interseting though. Would like to see what results you get with that type of weight.

There's a point of diminishing returns.....I think you would extend past it at 1500 gns.

        One thought,.......

Locate an easton fatbow, slide a regular od shaft inside it with a weight tube?

I know a.guy who has done something similar to that with fmjs and some other shaft.....I can't remember of hand.

          Are you wanting more KE?
I am interested to know the reasoning behind such extreme weight.
Staying tuned in to this one

Don't ignore spine when building heavier arrows or increasing FOC.

You will loose a significant amount of the advantage a heavier arrow or higher FOC arrows can provide you if they are not spined correctly.

For example if you have a correctly spined arrow for your bow setup and you simply screw on a heavier head. You most likely will be shooting an underspined arrow at diminished performance. Turn the draw weight down some to match the spine and you may find it actually out penetrates the arrow with less FOC at the higher draw weight.

              Sand or salt inside.
              A wooden dowel inside.
I've read of guys sliding one aluminum shaft inside another to increase weight.

I think CX makes a double insert. It connects a larger shaft to a smaller one. Call the folks at Lancaster Archery or visit their website.

I think he's just experimenting for fun to see what happens with an arrow of such weight. Don't think there's a particular reason. Just cause it would be fun to build one!

Yes sir I'm just playing around. You read so much about light and heavy arrows so I'm working my way up from a 300 gn to as much as I can get. Mainly just to see how the bow responds. I shot a 877 gn arrow at 202 fps. If you use the math of 3 fps per gain that puts that bow at 422 fps ibo. That's a lot of energy that a bow is waisting on light arrows.
Plus it would be fun to shot a big hog between the eyes and and shove that arrow out his butt.
People kill deer with recurves all the time at 150 fps. I figured when I hit that speed with a heavy arrow that's where I'll stop. Then it will be time to go stick 4 or 5 hogs at once.

On the spine. I'm getting great flight with a 300 spine arrow at 26.5 inches with a 300 gn tip. I hoping to get a 450 to 500 gn tip with a 200 spine. I might let my friend shoot first with me at a distance. I'll video just in case. Haha

i know people that will put a carbon arrow into a aluminum arrow, dont ask me how it works but i know of people doing it.

Dang, you sound like me. Started at 410 grains and ended up shooting a 560 grain arrow to hunt with the last 2 years and will not go any lighter, ever. Now I have to put together an arrow in the 800 to 900 grain range with a very high FOC, pushing 20%. Probably going to need an arrow spine in the .250 range for that type of FOC.

Yes mudslinger my wife is not real happy for the amount of time I'm spending playing with this so I blamed you. Sorry, but I am having fun and learning a lot at the same time. The whole thing started trying to make a broadhead cheep so when hog hunting if I loose one no big deal. Then I read your post on heavy and more foc for your hunt and now here I am. The broad head where are going to build is like the strickland but with a full 3 in cutting edge. Should slide in like a ice pick.
I'm really liking that 800 to 900 gn my self. I just want to get to 25 to 30 foc if it doest pan out I'll just go back to my 550 gn arrow.
