    Linemans rope fail

Ran across this video and felt it was share worthy. Not sure what caused his rope to fail, might have been the knot. Mother nature can be brutal on rope and other synthetic material. Wind blowing the rope against the tree causing it to fray along with UV deterioration is asking for disaster. Inspecting our lineman's rope and other fall systems should be second nature as checking our arrows.

Been on here before but a good reminder no doubt. It would be a long haul back to camp if I were to fall out of the tree I'm getting in this year in Oklahoma. Not taking any chances that I don't have to.

The HSS lifeline instructions don't recommend you leave them up for very long. I want to say its like 48 hours. Obviously they are covering their behinds.

OK, walking out with a head injury... really unsmart. I always get a good safety rope above the stand location prior to climbing up to hang my stand, and it still makes me nervous to the point where I want to have some stable support for both feet and two points of attachment. I did have a climber fall out from under me years ago, before safety harnesses were in vogue and found myself hanging from just a belt. I nearly suffocated to death. I look at that as my one and only warning. No deer is worth taking a chance.

I fell out of a 12' LADDER STAND!!!, in 1998! Got lucky. I landed just "right". Still hurt like hell. I was carrying a DeWalt up the ladder in my hand in the summer like a dumb ***. I reached to grab the side rail and got a handfull of camo material instead. I was 9 miles in of of US 277 just north of Loma Alta. If i hadnt landed just right i woulda laid there and died because it woulda been days before anyone came thru that 10,000 acre ranch where i was. Lesson learned the hard way.

                      Yep. Even in West Texas.

Climbing 500 foot towers for a living has made me think twice about climbing even a 20 ft treestand!

Oh hell no!!! I dont do towers. I'll ride personnel baskets over the tops of flares for inspection. Somethin about those towers scares the hell outta me!

I can't imagine going through what this guy did but as long as we inspect and trust our equipment before every climb there shouldn't be any problems. So really, it ain't that bad! Click image for larger version

Thats a great point. I try every year about a week before bow season to start a safety thread on harnesses and tree stand hunting. I know ive failed to check mine several times. It should be checked before each climb. Still i know several people that hunt high without one. They tell me they wont fall. My response is always "Not on purpose. Thats called Jumping!"...
