    Just getting into compound bow

New to compound bows. Just bought a used Fred Bear Lights Out. Came with quiver, release, hard case, and a dozen or so carbon arrors. Have muzzy mx-4. Still havent decided on going fixed blade or mechanical broadheads. Was thinking of fixed blade options either G5 Montec or Hell Razors and as far as mechanicals go was thinking of rage 2 blade. Was reading that fixed blade is a good way to start since there is less to go wrong but seen lots of pics with the mechanicals wounds and gotta say mechanicals have a bigger wound. I understand that shot placement is the most important thing.

Shot my first 5 arrows at a practice bag on some down time and don't know why I didn't start sooner. After initial cost to shoot gotta say a lot cheaper than guns and can practice in backyard or at work when down time. Really liking the sport.

Well welcome aboard! I would advise against the rage! Maybe look into swacker or the reaper for a good mech head! JMO. And since your just startin out I wouldnt take a shot over 20yrd cuz the blood will begin to boil inside when you draw back on any deer and with a 20yrd shot you will make a more ethical shot again thats JMO! Best of luck to ya!

Thanks. I have a buddy from work that's been hunting with a bow for quite some time and that is still his philosophy. He says at 20 yards is the longest distance he will shoot a deer with his bow. I don't plan on bow hunting until absolutely comfortable at 20 yards. Thanks for the input and good luck to ya

Did you have someone measure you, check your form, etc? Nocked & Loaded in lampassas and Double G in Georgetown are good pro shops that would be worth your time visiting. Also, there is an outdoor archery range on Ft Hood that is fun (close to BLORA). It's a great sport. I shot as a kid, got out of it for 15 years, then picked it back up last year and I'm totally hooked - the technology is so much better now. As far as broadheads, I shot some mechs, and they're ok, but with the rocky soil around here, they usually get beat up pretty bad after one shot. I tried a few cheaper fixed blades that either came apart on me (Allen) or shot horribly for me (Muzzy). I got some Slick Tricks today that shot well with no adjustment away from my field tips, plus they have hard steel ferrules and great blades. Practice, practice, practice...

Thanks. I've heard of Nocked & Loaded in lampasaas and plan on visiting them soon. I did measure fingertip to fingertip and did the whole calculation for a number to begin. I plan on getting everything checked by Nocked & Loaded when extra cash is available. As for now everything feels comfortable and just practicing and doing research on as much as I can. Thanks for your info and will look into that spot by BLORA.
