i would go with just your normal winchester cxp1 whatever it is in 55 gr.
ive killed more deer, pigs, and exotics, including an aoudad, with my .223 than any gun or bow ive ever owned combined. people think they arent very powerful, but i guarantee they could take down anything in north america within range.

I have done a lot of testing in the past with different bullets on coyotes and found that if you load up the 55gr. Core Lok to over 3000 fps it will make a massive hole in a coyote, should do the same for deer size animal as well. If you load it slower than 2600 fps it does not expand as well, is extremely accurate and will not tear up the pelt on a coyote.

shot several deer in neck with .223 and with different bullets and shooting a soft point bullet was far better with nock down and killing out right than a ballistic tip. The ballistic tip deer died way slower. soft points knocked em down hard and dead.

It's all about the shot placement

Federal Premium's factory loads with the 60 grain Nosler Partition have performed well for me. Luckily my rifle like's em too.

[QUOTE=SagDaddy;5940761]My wife is wanting to try her hand at deer hunting this year, and I found a cheap 223. I know 223 isn't the primo round for whitetail, but I need to start her our on something quiet and easy on the recoil. My question is what ammo (brand, grns, ect.) would work best?

                Thanks,
                Cody

You might also consider the twist on your barrel should you decide to try heavy match bullets, a 1 in 10" or faster for 68 and 69 gr. bullets. 75 or 77 gr. bullets twist rate of 1 in 9", 1 in 8", or 1 in 7".

I have dumped of bunch of deer on their butt with 55 gr hornady vmax very few have ran more than twenty yards last year on a mld doe hunt we shot 31 does and two of those ran about 40 yards but that was operator error not the bullet lol

My 8 year son has shot about 10 deer over the last two years with the 55 grain soft point Monarch. About $10 a box at Academy. Some were 200#+ south Texas bucks. Had one run maybe 75 yards the rest less than 50. Definitely all about shot placement!! My 5 year old is about to shoot his first deer or hog with same set up.

I have absolutely leveled deer and pigs with the 55gr Vmax.

Shot placement and accuracy is the big ticket. Took a dow with my .223 using Winchester silver tip 50gn at long range broadside. My rifle just happens to love the 50gn is the reason I used the light weight bullet. Retrieved the bullet from the far side of her and it had expanded just like a Nosler Partition.

This is the load I used for deer when I rifle hunted. Knocks them down quick.

Winchester Ranger 64gr soft point will do the trick.
