When I was in the Army, I went to a three day class that was devoted solely to the 6.8SPC cartridge through the AR platform. I don't think I have ever been so impressed with a new cartridge before. We tested it for CQB and out to 600 meters. We ran it through glass of various angles and types (tempered, laminated, etc). Downrange performance was very impressive and the recoil was only very slightly more pronounced than 5.56. There are many excellent hunting bullets available if you reload. Silver State Armory is one of the leading authorities on quality 6.8 loads.
As mentioned above by Mike D, you will need to run the AR10 platform for .308. Every part of the AR10 is more expensive than the AR15. If you go 6.8SPC, the lower will be compatible with any other AR15 upper. That way you can run different calibers for cheaper if you wanted to down the road.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I work in sporting goods and sell guns we have a couple options in dpms in .308 and we carry lots of ammo for it but they are so dang heavy. I had a saiga in .308 and kicked hard threw out beach ball size fire balls and way too much boom. I really want to shoot and ar15 in 6.8 and just buy one.

the 6.8 is a legit 400 yard hunting round, it is the best hunting cartridge available in the Ar-15 platform.
as mentioned above, SSA is selling some very sweet loads both hunting and tactical.
dont even mention the 300blk in the same breath, dont drink the Robert Silver's kool-aid
they are two different critters...
