I believed they fixed it, to where it's not a laser designator any longer. I want to say they are infared, You would have to check with Leupold. But they were originally illegal in Texas when they came out on game animals.

The new ones have a feature that allows you to turn is off and still use it for ranging.

It is legal in the state of TX. My wife has one on her Jewel and loves it. Once you get it dead on and set its a breeze to use and she loves it.

You can set them up at 10ft paralell to any pin when at full draw. It helps to have a friend helping. It then ranges at the press of a button anything that that pin is on. You still need to hit it 2 or 3 times to make sure. It works really well.
There are only a few western states where is may still not be legal. Leupold has a list on their website.

I just ordered a chuck Adams edition range finder by bushnell. It should come in today and I hope it'll get the job done!
