I know it is not going to compare to AGM/FLIR/etc but wondered if it would work for scanning woods behind the house when the dog is having a fit to see what is out there

I'm thinking it would be like a treadmill. Use it a bunch for a couple of weeks then it would sit in the safe.

To detect heat yes, but if you are wanting to figure out what it is would be a different story. Can not speak on this brand but, have used one of style similar in scope and could not make out what it was past 75 yards. Jump up to an AGM Rattler V2 19-256 $900.00 that can be used as a scope and a monocular.
