    Releases

I currently use a wrist release and I am contemplating switching to a thumb release just to try something different. Are there any advantages of using one over the other?

I'll be following this, I've been considering the same thing. One benefit I can see is the ability to clip it to your d-loop and leave it connected, then when a shot opportunity presents, all you have to do is grab the bow and grab the release, no more fumbling around in low light trying to find your loop.

Your anchor point WILL change, and it will take some getting used to, but I know a couple of people that have made the switch and are very happy with it.

Ask yourself what the ultimate goal is in changing releases. Are you shooting ok now, or are you starting to feel a little punchy with the trigger? A thumb release can change your mental attitude for a while, and you can shoot better. But you can also go the other way really quickly too.

Your anchor point will change and you might have a hard time finding a comfortable repeatable new one. You can clip on while sitting but you can also bump your trigger as you grab your bow, and drop your release. It happens. I know first hand. The better thumb trigger releases are pretty expensive, and there is night and day difference between tru fire and tru ball!

For target shooting where I can aim and hold for a while, I prefer a thumb release or friction release. For hunting I prefer a wrist release that I can dump the trigger on fairly quickly if the situation demands it. Also, gloves do to change the feel of a wrist release in your hand. So cold weather hunting I do not have to worry about anything being different.

Both have advantages and disadvantages, and if you have a place to try a thumb release without having to drop a lot of coin to find out you are not going to like it would be the way to go.

Started using the Tru Ball Boss X 360 a few years ago with my tournament set up and liked it so much I started using it for hunting 90% of the time except when I go to a bowhunting ranch because the deer are so jumpy and it's clicks when it goes off. I shoot it pretty much the same as my Scott's wrist strap but do have to make a slight left to right adjustment.

Likes: feels easier to draw and hold, clip it on your loop and your hands free

Dislikes: cost, loud, not as easy to keep up with as wrist strap

Now their are several models out there that are for hunting that are quiet and that are not near the cost of what I paid for mine but I have not shot them.

I did the same a few years ago. Bought a Thru Ball that I paid a couple hundred for. Loved it for shootin. Hated it for huntin. Constantly in my dang way...

And agree its louder. Mine had the cocking mechanism on it which kept the trigger from being pre loaded. It was ultra sweet to shoot. But to cumbersom imo for hunting. Or my style of hunting that is. Then there was the time I was up in my treestand setting and ready to go. Then I dropped it!!!! And several times I accidentally set it off while hunting as mentioned above...

Thanks guys! I will not be switching. I shoot for hunting only at this time and from your feedback they aren't ideal. I like my current release and will stick with it! This is why I love me some TBH!
