    custom rifle 6.5-284

Does anyone have experience with 6.5-284 round. I'm thinking about converting my 270 into a 6.5-284 and putting a Huskamaw scope on it. Not sure on how well it takes down whitetail, mule deer and elk. Any thoughts. Should just start from scratch and put a huskamaw on a new 300 and keep my old 270 with a 3x9 scope?

The 300 would be a better choice for an elk so I'd opt for a new 300WSM and the Huskamaw scope. No experience with a 6.5-.284 but it would not be significantly better than your .270.

No sir. Seen an Elk dropped at over 700 yds with a shoulder shot useing a 6.5x284. The trick? Berger VLD Bullets. That round will shoot lights out over most rounds. It retains a lot of energy at long rang with those bullets. Super accurate and flat dont kick.

Contact Mike D and Cajun Blake on here.

i've got a 6.5x55, but i thought it came out to a .264 cal. i think that it is a great hunting rifle, very little recoil and i have dropped every deer in it's tracks with it.

From what I can read, short barrel life is what you can expect from this round...as little as 600 rounds sometimes...I would think you will be better served with the 30 cal...300 win mag...than the 6.5 x 284....read a story years ago where a fellow dropped a moose with a 22 short...it's all location location location...700 yards with a 140 gr bullet....WOW

I have never heard of that short of a barrel life in that round. And i was not making a point like you were with the 22 and the moose. The 6.5x284 Norma has a more than proven track record. And actually it was a tad over 700 yards. If you will look up some of the old Best of the West episodes you will see it in action numerous times on numerous animals at long range.

It wasnt justc 140 grain bullet. It was a Berger 140

If someone only gets 600 rounds out of a 6.5-284 then they are just blasting round after round without cool down.

The 6.5 round is heads and shoulders above a 270. The ballistic coefficient and sectional densities are way higher than a 270 wishes it could ever be.

The round is out shooting the 300 win mags at the camp perry 1000 yard matches and doing it with significantly less recoil and muzzle blast.

Using the 140 grain Berger VLD bullets it is plenty of gun even at long distances. I've seen a mountain goat shot at 840 yards and a black bear shot at 963. Both were one shot kills.

There you are!!! I would venture to say Mike D and Cajun Blake are our resident rifle experts. Especially when it comes to custom rifles and Wildcat rounds.

I've never heard the short barrel life theory on the 6.5-284, I'll have to look into that. I know the 300 is could for any animal in north america, but I'm sure I could afford a new rifle the day I can aford to go moose or brown bear hunting, so I won't take that into account.

Thanks for the advice! Sorry to talk about rifles on a bow forum, but I always get great advice about everything on TBH. I did shoot a doe this evening with my bow. It didn't pass through, but thank God for ilumnok because I could see here run into the brush 100 yards.I hit a little low on the sternum, but the rage did the trick. She was pouring blood.

Take a second look at other scopes before you buy the Huskemaw.

My father-in-law has a 6.5x284 w/ a Leupold Mark V and it is a beast. It was custom made w/ laminate stock. We were shooting it @ the shooting range and you could here the pop when we hit the buffalo target @ 1141 yards. Best gun that I have shot ever. I would pick it over the 300 WSM.

Look at Nightforce and high-end Leupolds before the Huskewmaw

John Burns is hooked with Leupold now. I agree with you. Here is a link.
